Based in Sydney, Australia, Benjamin is a dialect and voice coach, and linguistic researcher. His unique skills draw on extensive training in phonetics and research, as well as in performing arts and education. Benjamin follows an evidence-based approach to achieve specific dialect or voice outcomes.
Benjamin has worked as a voice and accent tutor with students and performers at NIDA Open, Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP), Screenwise, The Voice Booth, The Hub Studio, Charles Sturt University, the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS), and ED5 International. He has coached productions for a number of theatre companies across Sydney, including The Hayes Theatre Co, ATYP, New Theatre, Virginia Plain Theatre, Fixed Foot Productions, and Genesian Theatre.
He runs regular accent and voice workshops in-person and online, and works privately with dozens of performers and corporates to address their specific accent and voice needs. Benjamin graduated from the Australian National University with First Class Honours and the University Medal, majoring in Linguistics, and completed a Master of Speech-Language Pathology at the University of Sydney. He is currently a PhD candidate in Linguistics and scholarship recipient at the Australian National University, exploring accent variation in Australia. From 2014-2023, Benjamin was the lead research assistant on the Sydney Speaks project (ARC Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language), which examined change and variation in Australian English in Sydney. Benjamin has also worked as Senior Research Officer and Site Co-ordinator for the ARC-funded AusKidTalk project at Macquarie University. He has presented at multiple linguistics conferences with ANU colleagues, and recently co-authored a paper on dialect coaching of Australian accents (Voice and Speech Review, 2020), which was nominated for the Dudley Knight Award for Outstanding Voice Scholarship (2021). Benjamin is a regular review contributor to the Voice and Speech Review, and serves on the editorial board of the journal. As a freelance linguist, he has worked as a consultant and voice director for several international tech companies including TELUS International (Finland), Lionbridge AI (UK), Pole-to-Win (UK), SIDE Studios (UK), and WeLocalize (USA), and as a language researcher for the Oxford University Press. He is an Accredited Linguist and member of the Australian Linguistics Society (ALS), and a Certified Practising Speech Pathologist (CPSP) and member of Speech Pathology Australia. He serves on the Editorial Board of the Voice and Speech Review and is a member of the Voice and Speech Trainers’ Association (VASTA), and the Australian Voice Association (AVA).
